Some Children by Holy Ghost!

I gotta admit I'm pretty bummed Holy Ghost! isn't playing the Los Angeles area leg of Identity Fest on September 4th out in San Bernardino. I'm still going of course but I really want to see them soon!

RACES @ The Bootleg Theater - 7/25/11

Due to a couple unfortunate circumstances (a.k.a. my girlfriend running super late & us somehow managing to get ourselves lost on the way to The Bootleg Theater), I missed pretty much all of Milo Greene's set on Monday night :-( On the bright side, RACES brought their A game (AGAIN) for the last night of their July residency at The Bootleg & I got a couple sweet videos!

P.S. RACES has confirmed that they're unable to play Vibe Fest 2011 on 10/8/11 at The Vibe Hotel in Hollywood because they'll be out of town for another gig. BUT...they seemed really interested & said they'd love to participate in the next event my girls & I put together!

Dolly Parton @ The Hollywood Bowl - 7/22/11

My mom came to visit last weekend & I wanted to show her The Hollywood Bowl (one of my favorite places in LA) & Dolly Parton just happened to be playing on the only night we had free so...I saw Dolly Parton at The Hollywood Bowl on Friday night. After all, variety is the spice of life!

Most memorable moment? When Dolly explained that she stole her look from the town tramp.

Milo Greene & Grouplove @ The Hammer Museum - 7/21/11

I'm SO glad I skipped the Santa Monica Pier concert on Thursday night to go to Also I Like To Rock at The Hammer Museum in Westwood instead. It was my 1st time seeing both Milo Greene & Grouplove & both bands seriously kicked ass. I'm about to go see Milo Greene again at The Bootleg Theater right now! You should come!! 

Minds Awake by Rumspringa (Video Directed by Shia Labeouf)

I can't wait to see Rumspringa play with The Ross Sea Party at The Silverlake Lounge on August 22nd! This song & video are both SO rad! Mad props to Shia Labeouf for his directorial skillz. I'm seriously impressed.

SPACEMEN 3

So, once again, I was JUST introduced to a band that's been around as long as I've been alive. Spacemen 3 is an English psychedelic rock band that originally formed in 1982 (the year I was born...you do the math :-P) & who many of my favorite modern-day artists have credited as an influence...including The Flaming Lips, Animal Collective, Hot Chip, MGMT & Pavement. 

My friend Nico turned me onto Spacemen 3 a few days ago &, after listening to a few tracks, I was hooked. Since Nico is already such a big fan, I decided to ask him to give me 4 or 5 of the best Spacemen 3 songs to feature here & his response was simply too perfect & descriptive not to copy word for word (with respective audio) below:

So here is what I think: Only from "RECURRING" (I figured you might feature this album):

1. Just To See You Smile - This track could be an intro in to modern (albeit not-so-modern) psychedelica, hypnotic Indian rhythms and all.


2. Billy Whizz Blue 1 - Makes me think, The Cowboy Junkies and Lou Reed having a jam session in Philly in the 90's, on heroin of course....great song to turn up loud, by oneself, on a cold winters day in Southwestern Australia - after a big heavy surf of course. And obviously, cooking a a white bean and tuna casoulet...


3. Drive/Feel So Sad - Although this is not one of my favorite songs, if you listen to Billy Whizz Blue 1, you really cannot listen to this song next, a continuation of the former. I always wonder if Brightblack Morning Light was listening to this tune on the drive to Bishop to record their debut album...Love the echo/pinging guitar work.
